For me, there’s nothing like the breeze from the northern winds in the summer in Greece. It makes the air refreshing and dry, a perfect chance to enjoy a good cigar with a sea view. And the cigar I’m smoking today is more than good. It’s a cigar to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cohiba: the Cohiba Majestuoso 1966.
I will have a double espresso and sparkling water with lime and ice: my go-to pairing when enjoying a fine cigar.
This is a 58 × 150 mm (5⅞″) vitola that came in 1,966 numbered humidors of 20 pieces. The factory name is Majestuosos 58. It was rolled in 2018, it is thick and smells great. The velvety wrapper looks fragile, so I will be careful with it. I do a punch cut and the draw is spot on.
It smells like earthy, sweet hay and reminds me a lot of the smell of cured tobacco leaves I experienced on a recent trip to Cuba.
Cold draw
The cold draw gives me grass and leather.
First third
Wow! First draw when lit and it’s already sweet. Aging is a great thing!
I get a variety of flavors: grass, honey, leather and a buttery smooth feeling.
Due to the big ring gauge, every draw brings a lot of earthy, sweet flavours. The retrohale reveals some sweet chamomile. I get no acidic taste at all at the moment. Not that I would mind it, just for completeness.
Second third
There is this grassy hay flavour that is sweet and numbs the tongue, which I have only encountered in other great Cohiba cigars so far (Novedosos, 55 Ideales). Another common characteristic with its cousins is the clover-like spicy taste.
It also gets hints of smokiness and an umami feeling. The flavour in the second third is now more intense.
What a treat to smoke this cigar in front of such a nice view! There are many smooth cigars, but this one is both full-flavoured and elegant at the same time.
I will remove the black label as late as possible to ensure the structural integrity of the vitola.
Final third
I’m in the final third now. One thing I notice is how aromatic this cigar is. The quality of the tobacco is top notch. The flavour is stronger now and very pleasant.
