Cohiba Siglo VI – Gran Reserva Cosecha 2003

A living legend in Cuban cigar history: the Cohiba cigar embodies the origins of what is now the world’s most legendary tobacco manufacturer. In the 1960s, Fidel Castro’s bodyguard, Bienvenido “Chicho” Pérez, offered him a fragrant cigar in a special format – and Castro immediately fell for the extraordinary taste. Shortly afterwards, he met Eduardo Rivera, a torcedor friend of his bodyguard, who became Castro’s personal cigar roller. Originally intended as an exclusive gift for Cuba’s state guests and high-ranking diplomats, Rivera founded a small manufactory in 1964 – the forerunner of the famous El Laguito in Havana. Eight hand-picked cigar rollers worked there, including Norma Fernández, who was given the name Cohiba in 1966. It was clear from the very first presentation at the gala evening of the XI Festival del Habano: this cigar is a new star in the Habanos firmament. With the Cohiba Siglo VI Gran Reserva 2003 is the first Gran Reserva to be launched on the market. The best tobaccos from the excellent 2003 harvest from the renowned San Juan y Martínez and San Luis growing regions in Pinar del Río were matured for this. All the tobaccos required for a Habano – wrapper leaf, binder leaf and the three filler tobaccos – were carefully selected, fermented and regularly checked over a period of five years. After this maturing period, the best torcedores at the Cohiba factory “El Laguito” in Havana rolled these cigars in Cañonazo format (150 mm long, ring gauge 52). Only 5,000 individually numbered boxes of 15 cigars exist worldwide.
