A living legend in Cuban cigar history: the Lancero is considered to be the first Cohiba cigar and tells the story of the origins of what is now the world’s most legendary tobacco manufacturer.
In the 1960s, Fidel Castro’s bodyguard, Bienvenido “Chicho” Pérez, offered him a fragrant cigar. fragrant cigar in an unusual format – and Castro immediately fell for the unusual taste. Shortly afterwards, he met Eduardo Rivera, a torcedor friend of his bodyguard, who became Castro’s personal cigar roller. Initially intended exclusively as a gift for Cuba’s state guests and high-ranking diplomats, Rivera founded a small manufactory in 1964 – the forerunner of the famous El Laguito in Havana. Eight hand-picked cigar rollers worked there, including Norma Fernández, who created the name Cohiba in 1966 – and thus laid the foundation for a unique brand of Habanos S.A. brand. With an impressive length of almost 20 cm and a slim 38 ring gauge, the Lancero format is undoubtedly the most striking and extravagant of Cohiba’s famous Línea Clásica. The globally unique expertise in quality and processing is reflected in every puff of the Lanceros: the carefully selected tobacco leaves from the renowned province of Vuelta Abajo are triple-fermented for the Línea Clásica and thus develop incredibly fine, unadulterated and at the same time intense aromas. With every puff, the Lancero proves that a Cuban creation of this size does not have to be overpowering – there is no overwhelming heaviness here. A highly complex, top-class pleasure that not only Fidel Castro succumbed to. To this day this Cohiba still has an elitist aura and embodies what is probably the most legendary statement of cigar enjoyment, captivating aficionados time and again with its incomparable charm. Currently particularly rare and coveted worldwide.
