Cuaba
since 1996
Cuaba was presented on 19 November 1996 at Claridge's Hotel in London. Habanos S.A. created the brand to revive a shape that had been fashionable in the late 19th century and then largely disappeared: the double figurado, tapered at both ends. The name comes from the Taíno, Cuba's indigenous people; cuaba was their word for a highly combustible bush used to light cigars during ceremonies. The first Cuabas were rolled at the Briones Montoto factory, the former Romeo y Julieta factory in Havana.

Double figurados are regarded as among the most demanding shapes to make, since both head and foot are formed by hand. The wrappers come from the Vuelta Abajo and every size is made totally by hand with long filler. Habanos rates the brand medium to full. At launch the range consisted of four sizes – Divinos, Tradicionales, Generosos and Exclusivos – and from 2003 larger vitolas such as the Distinguidos, Diademas and Salomones were added.
Smoke carries the Cuaba Distinguidos from the 2008 vintage, offered as an aged single cigar.
