The Habanos flagship

Cohiba

since 1966

Cohiba began in the 1960s as a private brand for Fidel Castro. The roller Eduardo Rivera had developed a personal blend that Castro liked so much he ordered it into production. From 1966 the cigars carried the name Cohiba, a Taíno word for rolled tobacco leaves. They were made at the El Laguito factory in Havana and for years served as gifts to officials and diplomats. Cohiba has been sold internationally since 1982.

Habanos describes its leaf as "the selection of the selection" from San Juan y Martínez and San Luis in the Vuelta Abajo. A hallmark of the brand is an additional fermentation of two of the three leaf types. The Línea Clásica, with Lanceros, Robusto and Espléndidos, is rated medium to full; the Línea 1492 of 1992, home of the Siglo sizes, medium. The Línea Maduro 5, with a wrapper aged five years, followed in 2007, and in 2010 the full-strength Línea Behike, the first to use medio tiempo leaf.

Smoke carries sizes from every line: Behike BHK 52, 54, 56 and 58, Siglo VI, Robusto, Lanceros, Espléndidos Gran Reserva, Pirámides Extra and Maduro 5 Genios, alongside Ediciones Especiales such as the Majestuosos and Ideales and several anniversary releases.
