Romeo y Julieta
since 1875
Romeo y Julieta takes its name from Shakespeare's tragedy; Habanos S.A. gives 1875 as its founding year. The brand gained international standing in the early 20th century under José "Pepín" Rodríguez Fernández, former manager of the Cabañas factory, who took it over in 1903. He travelled Europe and the Americas to promote it and was quick to see the importance of the cigar band, having personalised bands made for many customers. The historic Romeo y Julieta factory in Havana is known today as Briones Montoto.

Since Winston Churchill's visit to Havana in 1946 his name has appeared on the brand's bands, and he lent it to its most famous size: the churchill. Habanos describes Romeo y Julieta as a classic medium-strength Habano with a balanced, aromatic blend; filler and binder come from the Vuelta Abajo. The Churchills were joined by, among others, the Short Churchills (2006), the 55-ring-gauge Wide Churchills (2010) and the Petit Churchills (2012), while the Línea de Oro, with Dianas, Hidalgos and Nobles, is rated medium to full.
Smoke carries the Churchill Reserva Cosecha 2008, Wide Churchills in several versions – among them a Gran Reserva Cosecha 2009 – the Amantes from the 150th anniversary edition, and Romeo y Julieta Puritos.
